Representatives from MSMA were present at the State Capitol Tuesday as Gov. Phil Bryant signed into law H.B. 389, which prohibits motorists from texting and posting to social media with a handheld wireless communication device while operating a motor vehicle. MSMA President Claude Brunson, MD, testified before the Senate about the dangers of texting and driving and urged lawmakers to pass the bill. Representing MSMA at the bill-signing was, far right, Ann Rea, MD, of Summit, chairman of MSMA's Council on Legislation. "This law will save lives and everyone needs to know their loved ones will be protected because of it," Gov. Bryant said following the bill-signing. The law goes into effect July 1 and allows a civil fine of $25 per violation. It increases to $100 per violation in 2016.
